Famed attorney Johnnie Cochran, perhaps best known for his successful defense of O.J. Simpson, died Tuesday afternoon after suffering from an inoperable brain tumor, his family said. He was 67.
Famed Jazz Organist Jimmy Smith Dies. Musician Jimmy Smith, who made the organ into a standard instrument in jazz, has died. Smith began his career in the early 1950s and is credited with creating the distinctive sound of "soul jazz."

Ossie Davis, Requiem for a Pioneer
Married for 57 years, Ossie & Ruby Dee Davis already had a common goal—to make their mark on the American theater. Davis' ambition was to be a playwright and he set out on foot from his hometown in rural Georgia, to attend Howard University.
